FAQ's:

  • What kinds of tires are there?

While all appearing similar, a variety of tires with dramatically different performance capabilities are available. While labeled by their capabilities with terms such as "All-Terrain", "Mud-Terrain", "M+S" (Mud and Snow), "H/T" (Highway-Terrain), and more, understanding the features of a tire can help you select the right one for your usage even within these classes.

    • Sidewall

Referring to the sides of the tire that do not come in contact with the road, the construction of the sidewall is important primarily for off-road vehicles. Typically much thinner than the tread (the part of the tire that does meet the road), a thin sidewall, while making the tire much lighter, is susceptible to being slashed open when encountering a rock or sharp object while off-road. Certain tires offer double or triple-ply sidewalls, and some come Kevlar reinforced for added strength.

    • Tread Pattern

Most importantly, analyzing the tread pattern will allow you to "read" a tire's performance before it even goes on your car. Two features are particularly important to consider: siping and lug size. Firstly, siping--ever notice how all-season tires designed to perform well in rain and snow have many lines running through them? Those lines are referred to as "siping". Siping allows water or snow to pass through these lines in the tire by increasing surface area for better grip tread flexibility that allows for lug expansion under pressure. Secondly, lugs--the "lug" of the tire itself (not the wheel!) refers to the rubber chunks on the tire. Larger lugs with greater space (siping) between them generally perform well in loose material, or off-road, and are typically seen in mud-terrain tires. Street tires typically don't have large lugs, which decreases road noise, improves ride quality, and fuel efficiency. Being able to analyze a specific tire results in your ability to select a tire specifically suited to your driving style and vehicle needs!

    • Rubber Compound

Various rubber compounds are used for tires, from the more "sticky" to a harder, more robust compound. A stickier tire will deliver better grip on both pavement and off-road, however these tires typically wear down faster due to their softer nature. A stiffer rubber compound will likely struggle to maintain optimal grip while off-road or in inclement weather (without proper siping), however these tires will likely outlast their softer counterparts over time.

  • How do I know if I need to change or service my tires?

Often, terms such as "cupping", "balancing", "rotate", and "tire pressure" confuse drivers--with a variety of factors to pay attention to, drivers can sometime become overwhelmed. "Cupping", refers to the uneven deterioration of your tire's tread due to poor alignment or improper tire pressure--running your hand over the tire, it should feel flat and smooth, as any variation or concave sensation indicates an issue. Rotating and balancing your tires ensures that every tire wears evenly, as the weight distribution from the vehicle varies from corner to corner.
